Behind-the-scene commentary from Greg Evans:

“A bit of background on the wheelchair character, Zane (one of my favorite character names). I was inspired by Jeannie Schulz (widow of Charles Schulz) to follow her lead and help support Canine Companions For Independence. Allowing for my own financially modest means, I decided to promote CCI in the strip by having Bernice raise an assistance dog. In that program she meets – and falls hard for – Zane. They have an off-on relationship and then part ways. When Ann Eiffel enters the strip, Zane hasn’t been seen in some time. And speaking of favorite character names, Ann Eiffel is actually one of my least favorite. I have no idea what prompted me to coin such a bad pun-name. What I do like about her is the way she looks. Some characters are just fun to draw, easy to emote with. Ann wears her witchy, snarly, unctuous, catty behavior well, I think.”
