Behind-the-scene commentary from Greg Evans:
Who knew that planning a comic strip wedding would be WAY harder than planning a real one? My wife and I were proud and pleased to host two weddings – our son, Gary and our daughter, Karen – at our home. We didn’t do ALL the planning of course, very little of it, actually. We just worked like crazy to get the house and yard as perfect as possible (did you know that you can hire people to spray your brown lawn green?). The main goal in a real wedding is to make it glitch-and-drama-free.

But that’s not what you want in a comic strip wedding. What’s interesting if everything goes smoothly? No, you need glitches and drama. But that’s where the hard part comes in. Karen and I knew two years ago that Brad and Toni would get married around this time and we began discussing ways to make it interesting. The challenge was to keep it real (no Keystone Kops antics) and sweet (no tragic traumas). We wanted a fresh approach to a wedding, which is hard because weddings are key parts of so many movies and TV shows. Everything’s been done.

We ended up relying on our characters to provide the interest. TJ would naturally take over. Jonah would naturally do nothing. Shannon would naturally be… well, Shannon. The crew at the fire station would naturally throw a dorky-but-sweet party. And Brad and Toni would be called to fight a wildfire right before their wedding! OHMYGAW! The drama!

But there had to be more. Enter the Wedding Dress Contest. More on that in the next installment.

A fun drawing note in this collection. The 10-4 strip features a sales clerk character that looks oddly out of place in “Luann.” That’s because she’s the generic saleslady from “Cathy.”
