Behind-the-scene commentary from Greg Evans:
Although the loooong romance of Brad and Toni has deeply engaged readers, I often wonder how effective a comic strip is in portraying romance. With two mature, attractive people like Brad and Toni, the elephant in the room is sex. I can’t show them doing the horizontal cha-cha, of course, but how do I depict their love for each other? Words, sure. Gentle touches, yes. Kisses… hm. I’ve drawn them kissing but… does that ever get boring? When comic strip characters kiss, does it come across as sweet, sexy, loving and/or tender? Or does it just look funny because their noses don’t mesh quite right? In the history of Brad and Toni, probably the one image that said “love” more than any other is the one Toni’s recalling in the last strip here.

One little note about drawing. I’ve never been able to figure out exactly why, but I can’t seem to get Brad’s profile to match his full-face view. Look at the last two panels in the final strip here. Just about every one of Brad’s frontal features – hairline, nose, head shape – fails to translate properly into his profile. Maybe after I’ve drawn him 10,000 more times, I’ll get it right.

Oh, and I guess Toni referred to Shannon as her cousin so often that now Brad’s confused, too.
