Behind-the-scene commentary from Greg Evans:
Brad is determined to complete his firefighter training but is ready to quit trying to snag Toni. TJ actually does quit his half-baked plan to be a firefighter and makes moves on Toni. But for TJ, it’s really about motivating Brad to pursue her. True to form, TJ gives nothing but bad advice to poor Brad.

I decided that Toni shouldn’t BE the way she LOOKS. That is, she’s no Barbie glam-doll type. She’s into cars and dirty jokes. For the jokes I used a “Playboy’s Party Jokes” book that I found somewhere. Fine, I bought it, ok?

Looking at these old versions of Toni, I’m amazed at how much – and how quickly – her appearance changed. But I do that a lot with new characters. As I draw them day after day, I find that some of my original design ideas don’t work well and I begin to modify them. One exception is Toni’s brother, Jonah, who appears for the first time in this collection, looking exactly as he does today. Well, not exactly – the colorist back then made his hair brown instead of blonde. He didn’t get Toni’s hair right, either. She’s a pale blonde. Here, her hair is exactly the same color as Luann’s. These days, I have a new colorist who’s awesome.

We also meet one of my favorite characters, Dirk. Why “favorite”? Because characters with negative traits are always a lot more interesting than goodie-goodie ones. And Dirk is nothing BUT negative traits.
