Summer is here! Time for pool parties, hangin’ with friends, staying up late, and falling into the most perfect summer romance! Or, maybe just getting a job and doing the same ol’ same ol’.Whether your summer is brimming with boredom or packed with parties, we hope you enjoy this month’s Featured Collection and some tender insights into the current Camp Skye storyline.

Service with a Smile
Did you ever get a summer job? Something entry level, short term? In this storyline from 2006, Luann and friends try their hand at being servers for the residents of Sleepy Creek. Luann is earnest, Knute is, well, Knute, and Tiffany (aka Sheraton St. Louis) is full of herself. Obviously. Read the collection HERE!
You know how Luann always starts summer with big plans — the kind where she pictures herself transformed by August, then looks back in September and realizes she basically spent it on the couch? This year’s different. The camp counselor storyline running right now was born from a desire to give Luann an opportunity to find herself in a totally new environment.
We actually wrote this story to run last summer. But as the timing got closer, the flooding tragedy in Texas happened, and with so many families grieving children who’d been at camp that same week, putting Luann at a similar camp on the page just didn’t feel right. So we made a last-minute pivot — bumping up a week of Bernice at home, plugging in reruns of the gang at a comic convention, and having Luann settle for another summer at Weenie World. Looking back, we’re glad we made that call.
This year, we’re letting Luann get the job — and we’re excited for readers to meet her campers and join in on the summer fun. As we come up on the anniversary of that heartbreaking event, though, our thoughts are still with the families it affected.
Last year’s quick pivot to comic convention reruns tied into a source of inspiration: a few years ago at San Diego Comic-Con, Karen ran into Yemaya — a former middle school student, now a young adult. They’ve connected every year since, and a little of Yemaya’s kind and joyful spirit found its way into this summer’s camp counselor character, who happens to share her name.
It’s one of the fun parts of working on a strip with this much history — people from our lives have a way of sneaking onto the page. A name, a phrase, a personality trait. Sometimes it’s family, sometimes friends, sometimes someone we haven’t seen in years who turns up again and reminds us why those connections stick.
Yemaya, for what it’s worth, has been working with kids herself and is thinking about becoming a librarian. There’s something nice about watching someone you once taught grow into someone who wants to do that same kind of work for the next generation — not so different from watching Luann find her own footing this summer.
