Behind-the-scene commentary from Greg Evans:
For me, the tricky part of Brad and Toni’s wedding was showing the winning dress in the strip. We wanted minimal time between end of voting and the reveal in the strip. I work on a 6 week deadline which meant that we had to backtime the contest entry announcement and the “vote now” announcement so that the minute the voting was done, I would start drawing the winning dress in the wedding ceremony.
It was a VERY close race in the final hours between the top two vote-getters. In the end, Philip Gust won and I got busy.
The wedding itself went off without a hitch, I’m happy to say. Karen joined me and my wife, Betty, at the ceremony on December 11 (I actually put on a TIE!) and it was all just right.
If you wonder who the others are in that Sunday panel, here’s the lineup:
On Brad’s side, front row, l-r: Grandma, Grandpa, Nancy, Frank. Second row: Bernice, Gunther, Mrs. Horner, Aunt Vicki. In the back, making an unexpected appearance is Brad’s first girlfriend, Diane. She’s not been seen in the strip since, oh, I dunno, 1997.
On Toni’s side, front row, l-r: Toni’s pal from EMT school, Toni’s Aunt, The Captain, the EMT chief. Second row: the station gang, grubby from the wildfire. Third row: the Evans gang.
Karen and I decided to play it pretty straight for the ceremony. A few gentle gags, some tender moments, a bit of nostalgia.
And a fire engine to leave in. How cool is that?
A personal thanks to all of you who participated in this event, either by designing a dress, voting, donating to FireHero, signing the guestbook, sending a sentiment – or reading all my drivel. It’s the readers who matter. Always have been, always wIll be. So thanks for being there.
